Welcome to the SS180 Archive. This site is dedicated solely to Piaggios Vespa SS 180 Super Sport.
The site contains as much information as I can find on the model and I hope you can find what you are looking
for here. If you have something I don't have here, then I would love to hear from you.
By 1964 the GS in its various guises had been around for ten years. Although its finely proportioned lines and
curved styling had given it the status of an instant "classic", fashions were changing. Every item of
domestic and industrial design - be it a transistor radio or a car - was gradually becoming square edged.
Piaggio were proud of the GS, and, like Jaguar with their mark 2 saloon, had been holding out against
the prevailing trends. After Lambretta introduced their sharp-edged series three in 1962, the next new
Vespa to be introduced -the GL- had rather half-hearted "edges" on the mudguard and panels. When tooling
up for the new 50/90 in 1963 Piaggio had to get off the fence and come to a decision as to what shape
the side panels were going to be since they were integral to the frame and could not be easily changed.
History relates that the new "small frame" had sharp edges and a new Vespa "House Style" was born.
It was becoming obvious that Piaggio were going to have to throw in the towel with the GS styling,
and at the Paris show in October 1964 a new model was introduced to the public.
The above paragraph is the introduction for Ashley Lentons great story of the SS180 and can be seen in full on the facts
page.
Please remember to give me details of your SS for inclusion in the SS Register.
